In Jan 2024, while at a company offsite at Long Island, I received a frantic call from our doggy daycare informing us that George had taken ill. He had diarrhea and had vomited three times, with blood.
My husband left work abruptly and rushed to pick him up. At the vet, an X-ray was done along with a parasite test. The total vet bill came up to $856. Including the Uber rides taken to get him to the vet ASAP, we incurred over $1,000 in bills.
Three days later, the vet called back with the lab results and told us that the cause of George’s vomiting was the consumption of fecal matter. At that moment, we heaved a sigh – what a silly billy.
It then got me thinking – what if we could use machine learning to solve this problem. A camera that scans the surroundings to detect poop like images, compares it with a large database of poop images, and sends out a beep to warn the dog and owner that a safe distance between a snoot and poop has been breached.
So I decided to embark on this project while in consultation with a couple of friends. Streamlining workflows between hardware and software is never easy, but I hope Paws Off Poo could save many dog owners like me the anxiety and stress when it comes to pulling your dog away from poop.
